Antonio Begarelli in Bologna

The Modenese artist Antonio Begarelli (1499–1565) was one of the leading lights of sixteenth century Italian sculpture. He was also one of the most refined exponents of Raphaelism in Emilia. Giorgio Vasari (1568) writes that the artist had also caught the eye of Michelangelo, who particularly appreciated his technique of imitating marble when applying white colouration to his terracotta works. This paper proposes that two small terracotta statues of Saints Vitale and Agricola are the work of Begarelli. They are housed in the church of the same name in Bologna. The attribution, based on their style of production, is further backed up by the fact that the works were unquestionably commissioned by the Benedictine nuns. Back then the nuns were lodged in a convent adjoining the church and it was here that the statues were housed. Begarelli’s familiarity with the Cassinese Congregation is well noted. So much so, that from the 1530s onwards he worked almost exclusively at their bidding. As for their date, the two terracotta works can be placed in the 1540s, casting new light on the world of sculpture in Bologna around about the middle of the 16th century.

["post-10003","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
