In particolare, alcuni spunti significativi emergono dal riesame della documentazione esistente per il quadriportico della Cattedrale di Capua, una porzione del complesso episcopale sostanzialmente poco indagata anche a causa della sua integrale ricostruzione dopo i danni della Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Concordemente attribuito all\u2019iniziativa del vescovo Erveo nella seconda met\u00e0 dell\u2019XI secolo, che avrebbe riprodotto a Capua il prototipo architettonico scelto per la basilica annessa all\u2019Abbazia di Montecassino, il quadriportico romanico avrebbe in realt\u00e0 sostituito un precedente impianto dalla fisionomia pi\u00f9 articolata, la cui presenza \u00e8 ragionevolmente motivata da alcuni sepolcri conservati all\u2019interno di questo spazio e di cui si hanno tracce evidenti nella documentazione. Analogamente a numerosi impianti coevi, \u00e8 probabile che esso si configurasse come una sorta di\u00a0<em>atrium<\/em>\u00a0che componeva l\u2019impianto altomedievale.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: center;\"><strong>New considerations on the four-sided portico of Capua Cathedral on the Volturno<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em>Recent ongoing research in Capua has brought to light several elements associated with the foundation of the town on the banks of the River Volturno. The town was set up by the Longobard\u00a0<em>\u00e9lite<\/em>\u00a0in the mid ninth century. Some lines of research in particular sprang from the re-examination of existing documentation of the four-sided portico of Capua Cathedral. It forms part of an Episcopal complex which has been left substantially uninvestigated, given that it was entirely reconstructed after Second World War damage. It is widely agreed that it owes its existence to Bishop Evreo who, in the mid eleventh century, reproduced in Capua the architectural prototype chosen for the basilica annex of Montecassino Abbey. Actually, the four-sided portico replaced a previous building with a more complex ground plan. It\u2019s existence can rationally be deduced from some graves, unearthed and documented, within the enclosed area.
