Da Villa d\u2019Este ai Musei Vaticani, passando per lo studio di Vincenzo Pacetti\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<div align=\"justify\">\n<p><strong>Estratto dal volume speciale <em><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Vincenzo Pacetti, Roma, L\u2019europa all\u2019epoca del Grand Tour <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">(2017)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>La statua di Ercole giacente decorava una delle fontane centrali lungo la prospettiva saliente del giardino di Villa d\u2019Este e fu l\u2019ultima, tra quelle prelevate dalla residenza tiburtina, ad arrivare nello studio di Vincenzo Pacetti il 28 gennaio 1788. Ben presto lo scultore ne avvi\u00f2 il restauro e nel contempo cominci\u00f2 a proporne la vendita. Nonostante il positivo giudizio di Ennio Quirino Visconti, la statua stentava a trovare un acquirente e finalmente nel 1804 venne venduta, insieme a molte altre, a papa Pio VII per essere allestita nel Museo Chiaramonti. L\u2019Ercole era stato gi\u00e0 integrato della testa, delle braccia e delle gambe nella seconda met\u00e0 del Cinquecento. La qualit\u00e0 di questo intervento, attribuibile al maestro lombardo Niccol\u00f2 Longhi, dovette essere evidente anche per il Pacetti che decise di conservare sostanzialmente i completamenti cinquecenteschi, nonostante questi mostrassero segni manifesti di un lungo tempo trascorso all\u2019aperto. Durante il recente restauro che ha interessato la statua \u00e8 stato possibile indagare i metodi impiegati dal Pacetti, soprattutto nelle soluzioni adottate per lo smontaggio e il riassemblaggio della scultura. La sorpresa pi\u00f9 grande \u00e8 venuta per\u00f2 dal basamento che lo scultore aveva inserito al di sotto della figura giacente, una spessa lastra in marmo proconnesio che si \u00e8 rivelata essere il riutilizzo di una \u201cantica tavola delle sorti circensi\u201d ritrovata nell\u2019antica\u00a0<em>Bovillae<\/em>\u00a0e pubblicata nel repertorio postumo di Giovanni Battista Piranesi\u00a0<em>Vasi, candelabri, cippi, sarcophagi, tripodi, lucerne, ed ornamenti antichi<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>The\u00a0Reclining\u00a0Hercules\u00a0\u00abcosa\u00a0molto\u00a0rara\u00bb: From\u00a0Villa\u00a0d\u2019Este\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0Vatican\u00a0Museums\u00a0by\u00a0way\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0studio\u00a0of\u00a0Vincenzo\u00a0Pacetti<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The statue of a reclining Hercules ornamented one of the central fountains along the rising perspective of the Villa d\u2019Este gardens, and was the last such piece to be removed from the residence, arriving in Vincenzo Pacetti\u2019s studio on January 28th, 1788. The sculptor lost no time in commencing with its restoration, in the meantime also initiating attempts to sell it. But even with the approval and admiration of Ennio Quirino Visconti, it still proved difficult to find a buyer, and in the end it was sold to Pope Pius VII, together with a great deal of other statuary, for inclusion in the Chiaramonti Muse\u00acum in 1804. The Este Hercules had already been \u201ccompleted\u201d in the late 16th century with the addition of the head, arms and legs. The quality of this intervention, attributable to the Lombard sculptor Niccol\u00f2 Longhi, must have also been self\u2013 evident to Pacetti, who decided to retain most of the 16th\u2013century additions, despite the signs of severe weathering. During the recent conservation of the statue it has been possible to investigate the methods employed by Pacetti, espe-cially his solutions for dismantling and then reassembling the sculpture. The greatest revelation, however, has been the discovery of the origins of the base the sculptor inserted beneath the reclining figure.
