Il santuario di Santa Maria della Pace, costruito per volont\u00e0 di papa Sisto IV (1471\u20131484) della Rovere, fu uno dei pi\u00f9 importanti cantieri del Quattrocento romano. Sebbene d\u2019impianto molto singolare per l\u2019epoca \u2014 una tribuna ottagona, con una corta navata applicata a una delle sue facce \u2014 \u00e8 stata oggetto di minore attenzione storiografica rispetto ad altre imprese costruttive roveresche, come la Cappella Sistina o Santa Maria del Popolo. Questo saggio riconsidera quanto gi\u00e0 noto riguardo la fondazione della chiesa, l\u2019immagine miracolosa che contiene e l\u2019impatto che il culto mariano ha esercitato sulla sua definizione, specie in merito a orientamento e tipologia. Il saggio chiarisce la storia dell\u2019edificio fino alla fine del pontificato di Innocenzo VIII e offre una ricostruzione dettagliata della sua struttura originaria, utilizzando i recenti affreschi scoperti nel chiostro bramantesco e svariati disegni (molti dei quali mai connessi alla fabbrica). Tale ricostruzione conferma la proposta di Hans Ost che l\u2019interno fosse scandito da cappelle semicircolari, ma va oltre fornendo i dettagli della sua articolazione e analizzandone lo stile, seguendo cio\u00e8 passo passo l\u2019iter<\/em> progettuale e le idiosincrasie del suo architetto, e ponendo le premesse per future attribuzioni. Infine, il saggio considera il ruolo giocato dalla chiesa della Pace nel panorama dell\u2019architettura del primo Rinascimento romano, sostenendo che precedenti quali Santa Maria delle Febbre \u2014 anch\u2019essa santuario mariano \u2014 e i tempietti<\/em> ottagoni situati all\u2019imboccatura di Ponte Sant\u2019Angelo abbiano esercitato un\u2019influenza diretta nelle fasi preliminari del progetto.<\/p>\n

Templum Pacis: Santa Maria della Pace in the Quattrocento<\/em><\/p>\n

The pilgrimage church of Santa Maria della Pace, built under the patronage of Pope Sixtus IV (1471\u20131484), was one of the great architectural projects of fifteenth\u2013century Rome. Although it has a highly unusual form for the date \u2014 a large octagon with a small nave attached to one of its faces \u2014 it has received relatively little attention in the literature, unlike Sixtus\u2019 other great projects the Sistine Chapel and Santa Maria del Popolo. This essay reconsiders what is known about the foundation of the church, its miracle\u2013working image and the effect that the miracle\u2013cult had on the planning of the church, in particular on its orientation and plan\u2013type. It goes on to reconstruct the building\u2019s history up to the end of the pontificate of Innocent VIII, and to offer a detailed reconstruction of the original form of the church, using the recently discovered frescoes in Bramante\u2019s attached cloister and the many surviving drawings (several previously unknown). This reconstruction confirms Ost\u2019s proposal that the church was entirely surrounded by semi\u2013circular chapels, but goes further in providing detailed evidence for the original interior articulation. The essay offers some observations on the style and iconography of the detailing that may help identify the architect at some future point and reconstructs the architect\u2019s design process by analysing various idiosyncrasies in the shape of the building\u2019s plan. Finally, it considers the question of the place of the church in the architecture of early Renaissance Rome, arguing that precedents such as Santa Maria della Febbre, itself an octagonal Marian shrine, and the octagonal\u00a0tempietti\u00a0<\/em>that once stood on Ponte Sant\u2019Angelo had a direct influence on the genesis of the design.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
