Si avanza l\u2019ipotesi che esso, in origine, costituisse la porzione centrale del timpano della cappella di Jacopo e Simone di Ghino, gi\u00e0 nella pieve aretina di Santa Maria, commissionata nel 1332 ad Agostino di Giovanni e al figlio Giovanni. La cappella Ghini non solo fu il modello per altre strutture analoghe erette ad Arezzo nella prima met\u00e0 del Trecento, ma rappresent\u00f2 verosimilmente il debutto artistico di Giovanni d\u2019Agostino, dal momento che i documenti e il dato stilistico inducono a pensare che Agostino ne demand\u00f2 integralmente la realizzazione al figlio. Viene inoltre dedicato ampio spazio alla ricostruzione delle vicende occorse nei secoli alla cappella scomparsa e alle possibili vie attraverso cui il rilievo giunse a palazzo Chiaromanni-Albergotti.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u00abHalf a Saviour in fine marble and big and well made\u00bb: <em>Giovanni d\u2019Agostino\u2019s debut in the Ghini chapel in Santa Maria della Pieve in Arezzo<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The paper covers a previously unpublished representation of the benedictory Redeemer, in Arezzo. The relief in question is encased in the outer wall of Palazzo Chiaromanni-Albergotti. A formal analysis has identified it as the work of the Sienese sculptor Giovanni d\u2019Agostino. It may well have been the central part of the gable of the Jacopo and Simone di Ghino Chapel. In 1332 Agostino di Giovanni and his son Giovanni had been commissioned to design this for the parish church of Santa Maria in Arezzo. The Ghini Chapel was to become the model for similar structures in Arezzo in the first half of the 1300s. It probably also represents Giovanni d\u2019Agostino\u2019s artistic debut, given that both the documentation and style of the work suggest that Agostino had put its completion solely in the hands of his son.
