It included numerous paintings dating from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century, tapestry cartoons, ancient sculptures, Roman sarcophagi, inscribed funerary altars and even a Late Antique mosaic. When the entailed collection was catalogued in 1892 by Giulio Cantalamessa, the Ministry of Public Education official charged with preparing a new inventory, it comprised 158 works: 126 paintings and 31 antiquities.

The core of the volume is the complete publication of the Catalogue of Works of Art Subject to the Fideicommissum of the Barberini Family (Catalogo delle opere d’arte soggette a vincolo fidecommissario di Casa Barberini), compiled by Giulio Cantalamessa, in which the art historian recorded the artist, subject, physical characteristics and location within the palazzo of every object in the entailed collection. The accompanying research sought to identify each of these works and to match Cantalamessa’s entries with corresponding photographs. This objective was achieved in every case except for two ancient cippi, or marker stones, and a Roman inscription, for which no images have yet been located. To illustrate the catalogue, historical black–and–white photographs taken by the Gabinetto Fotografico Nazionale (GFN) between the 1930s and 1950s were selected, with additional images kindly provided by the GFN and the Fondazione Zeri.

In 1907, Federico Hermanin and Roberto Paribeni carried out a new survey of the fedecommesso collection, compiling for the occasion the Report on the Survey of the Fideicommissary Art Collection of the Illustrious House of Barberini (Verbale di ricognizione del patrimonio artistico fidecommissario dell’Ecc.ma Casa Barberini). On completing their inspection, the two Ministry officials considered it necessary to add 13 further paintings and an unnumbered ancient marble sculpture, known as the “Monopodium”, to the works already bound by the fedecommesso. The present volume also publishes the corresponding entries from their report, together with photographs from the Gabinetto Fotografico Nazionale, for each of these additions.

In 1934, the Barberini fedecommesso was dissolved by a law enacted specifically for that purpose by the Mussolini government, at the urging of senior officials in the Administration for Antiquities and Fine Arts (Law no. 928 of June 4 1934). The legislation ratified an agreement signed a month earlier, on March 30, between members of the Barberini and Corsini families and the Italian State.

Under the terms of the Agreement Concerning the Art Collection of the Barberini Fedecommesso (Convenzione relativa alla collezione artistica del Fedecommesso Barberini), the family transferred 17 works from the former entailed estate to the national collections. In return, the family obtained full and unrestricted ownership of 138 artworks, which could thereafter be sold or exported without payment of export duties. The remaining 15 works from the former entailed estate remained in the family’s possession but became subject to the protection provisions of Law no. 364 of 20 June 1909.

As might be expected, many of the 138 works released from entail were quickly sold abroad.
