La scultura polimaterica era il vanto di una laboriosa officina di Sansepolcro che faceva capo a Romano Alberti detto il Nero. Questi aveva aperto un attrezzato laboratorio-atelier (pi\u00f9 tardi, poi, aprir\u00e0 una bottega anche a Roma), specializzato nell\u2019esecuzione di immagini devozionali di sicuro successo. Dalla bottega, che lavor\u00f2 fino al 1568, anno di morte del maestro, venivano prodotte numerose statue \u201cda vestire\u201d, raffiguranti San Rocco, gettonatissimo in anni di pestilenze: Madonne, destinate alla devozione, in particolare di confraternite femminili, Ges\u00f9 bambini e altri Bambini santi, idolatrati dal culto domestico e monastico, e crocifissi lignei, di forte impatto emotivo, legati alla contrizione piagnona postsavonaroliana. All\u2019artista, il cui\u00a0corpus, precedentemente anonimo, era riferito ad una personalit\u00e0 indicata come Maestro di Magione, \u00e8 stata dedicata una mostra allestita nel 2005 nella chiesa-museo di Santa Croce a Umbertide. Il contributo intende ricostruire, attraverso un dialogo serrato fra le risultanze delle indagini diagnostiche e le informazioni ricevute dalle fonti, le caratteristiche di alcuni prodotti artistici, ampiamente diffusi nel Rinascimento, costituiti dall\u2019aggregazione di pi\u00f9 materiali abilmente plasmati e modellati, a ottenere opere di una notevole complessit\u00e0 tecnica, mettendoli in relazione con le tecniche e i procedimenti operativi della produzione in terracotta, stucco e cera.<\/p>\n

Techniques for Mixed\u2013Materials Sculptures in the Workshop of Nero Alberti of Sansepolcro:<\/strong>
\ndiagnostic investigations and analyses of the sources<\/strong><\/p>\n
This mixed\u2013materials sculpture was the showpiece of a busy workshop in Sansepolcro of which Romano Alberti, called il Nero, was the head. Sure of success, he had opened a fully equipped atelier (later he\u2019d open another in Rome) specialized in the execution of devotional\u00a0 images. Many \u201cto be dressed\u201d statues were produced in this workshop, which existed until 1568, the year the maestro died. These images included San Rocco, highly popular during years of pestilence; Madonnas destined to serve as devotional objects, particularly for female confraternities; images of Baby Jesus and other child saints; more idolized images for monasteries and private houses; and wooden crucifixes whose strong emotional impact was tied to post\u2013Savonarola remorse and contrition. A special exhibition mounted in 2005 in the museum and church of the Holy Cross of Umbertide was dedicated to the artist, Maestro di Magione, whose work had previously been labelled anonymous. This article intends, through a sharp dialogue between the results of diagnostic investigations and information from other sources, to reconstruct the characteristics of several works that were widespread during the Renaissance, works that are an aggregation of different, very ably moulded and modelled materials and that achieve a very notable technical complexity, and juxtapose these with techniques and procedures used in the production of terra cotta, stucco and wax.
