Tra la fine del \u2018500 e gli inizi del \u2018600, in Italia meridionale cos\u00ec come in\u00a0altri luoghi, la grande fortuna commerciale della scultura in legno, e in particolare delle sculture a tutt\u2019altezza e specie a mezzo busto di santi, si lega in modo significativo alla funzione spiccatamente cultuale e devozionale di questo genere di manufatti ed alla loro natura sinergica con uno dei pi\u00f9 potenti e pi\u00f9 richiesti \u201cstrumenti\u201d di queste stesse pratiche di devozione nell\u2019et\u00e0 della Controriforma, le reliquie appunto dei santi. Attraverso l\u2019esame della trattatistica e dei decreti sinodali post-tridentini, dei busti-reliquiario napoletani in legno ancora conservati e della documentazione d\u2019archivio relativa a questo genere di prodotti, il saggio prova a spiegare alcune caratteristiche di questi ultimi – dal realismo della raffigurazione, la resa fedele degli incarnati e delle stoffe, sino (e di contro) alla finitura in argento ed oro – sulla base delle istanze controriformate di chiarezza, verit\u00e0 e decoro delle reliquie stesse, cos\u00ec come delle immagini sacre, nonch\u00e9 di pregio dei loro contenitori, ove possibile infatti realizzati in metallo prezioso.<\/p>\n

\nThe Success and Characteristics of Statues and Reliquary Busts in Naples and the Surrounding Provinces between the Endof the Sixteenth and Beginning of the Seventeenth Centuries<\/strong><\/p>\n

In southern Italy and other regions, between the end of the sixteenth and the beginning of the seventeenth century, the popularity and commercial fortune of wood sculpture, particularly full and half images of saints, is related in significant ways to their distinct religious and devotional function and to their synergy with one of the most powerful and sought\u2013after \u201ctools\u201d of devotional practice in the age of the Counter\u2013Reformation, namely the relics of saints. This essay attempts to explain the characteristics of wood statuary through an examination of the treatises and post\u2013Tridentine council decrees, through the still preserved Neapolitan wood bust reliquaries and through the archival documentation related to this type of artefact\u2013from the realism of the representations and life\u2013like rendering of skin complexion, and the faithful replication of fabrics even with contrasting finishes in silver and gold\u2013all following the Counter\u2013Reformation demand for didactic clarity, truth and decorum for the relics themselves, and the associated sacred images, not to mention their containers realised whenever possible in precious metals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
