Uno dei pezzi di maggior pregio delle raccolte sabaude di antichit\u00e0 \u00e8 il gruppo marmoreo di Esculapio e Igea, ancora oggi conservato nel cortile del Palazzo Reale di Torino. Spesso trascurato nelle antiche descrizioni della citt\u00e0 e ancora oggi quasi sempre ignorato nelle moderne guide di viaggio, del gruppo erano rimaste in gran parte sconosciute, fino a questo momento, le vicende collezionistiche che lo avevano portato a Torino, una lacuna che il presente studio mira, almeno in parte, a colmare. E\u2019 stato cos\u00ec possibile ricostruire la storia antiquaria del gruppo fin dalla met\u00e0 del Cinquecento, quando si trovava a Roma nel palazzo dei Maddaleni Capodiferro: la fama del pezzo, testimoniata dagli antiquari dell\u2019epoca e da alcuni disegni di artisti rinascimentali, dovette probabilmente ispirare analoghe composizioni statuarie, come il gruppo di Esculapio e Igea gi\u00e0 nella villa del cardinale Ippolito d\u2019Este a Tivoli, creato a partire da due statue antiche frammentarie. Da Roma il gruppo pass\u00f2, in un momento imprecisato, nelle raccolte genovesi dei Durazzo, ed \u00e8 insieme al palazzo di via Balbi, poi Reale, che i Savoia lo acquisteranno nel 1824. L\u2019esame degli inventari conservati all\u2019Archivio di Stato di Torino ha permesso di ricostruire l\u2019allestimento statuario del giardino di Palazzo Durazzo, un tempo dominato dal gruppo dell\u2019Esculapio e Igea e di individuare altri possibili passaggi di sculture antiche dai Durazzo ai Savoia, un percorso collezionistico ancora in gran parte da esplorare.<\/div>\n

A group of\u00a0 Aesculapius and Hygiea and its transfer from Rome to Genoa and Turin:
\na note on the collection of antiquities of the House of Savoy<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the pieces of greatest prestige in the collection of antiquities of the princes of Savoy, Italy\u2019s former royal family, is the marble group of Aesculapius and Hygiea, still displayed in the courtyard of the Palazzo Reale in Turin. Often ignored by the earlier descriptions of the city and still today invariably ignored in modern guidebooks, the group\u2019s history and provenance, in particular the events in the history of collecting that brought it to Turin, have hitherto remained largely unknown. This is a gap that the present article attempts, at least in part, to fill. The author has been able to reconstruct the group\u2019s antiquarian history since the mid-sixteenth century, when it was situated in the Palazzo dei Maddaleni Capodiferro in Rome: the fame of the group, attested by antiquaries of the period and by some drawings of Renaissance artists, presumably inspired other similar sculptural compositions, such as the group of Aesculapius and Hygiea formerly in the Villa of Cardinal Ippolito d\u2019Este a Tivoli, created by joining together two fragmentary antique statues. From Rome the group passed, at an unspecified date, into the Genoese collection of the Durazzo family, and it was together with their palace on the Via Balbi, later to become the Palazzo Reale, that the House of Savoy acquired it in 1824. Examination of the inventories preserved in the Archivio di Stato in Turin has enabled the author to reconstruct the display of statues in the garden of the Palazzo Durazzo, at one time dominated by the group of Aesculapius and Hygiea, and to identify other possible transfers of ancient sculptures from the collection of the Durazzo to that of Savoy, a collecting history that remains in large part to explore.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
