L\u2019articolo presenta i risultati degli ultimi restauri nell\u2019antica parrocchiale di Verzuolo, che hanno portato alla luce un\u2019interessante serie di affreschi medievali. Apre il saggio Bruno Ciliento, con una breve rassegna delle vicende che hanno visto prima la crescente importanza del centro di Verzuolo – col suo castello, i suoi signori e la chiesa ad essi legata -, poi il lento declino del castello e della chiesa, infine, a partire dalla fine dell\u2019Ottocento, il rinnovato interesse verso la parrocchiale e le conseguenti iniziative di restauro. Segue l\u2019intervento di Costanza Segre Montel sugli affreschi romanici della cella del campanile, originaria cappella del primo castello dei signori di Verzuolo. Il ciclo, dedicato a San Nicola, ha acquistato con i restauri migliore leggibilit\u00e0, ma soprattutto ha recuperato ulteriori anche se modeste porzioni di superficie affrescata, che hanno permesso di identificare con maggior sicurezza alcune scene. Questi affreschi sono, con quelli della cappella di Sant\u2019Eldrado alla Novalesa, i pi\u00f9 antichi in occidente dedicati a San Nicola, entrambi posteriori alla traslazione delle reliquie del santo a Bari (1087), ma tra di loro indipendenti, sia per i modelli iconografici che per lo stile, ben radicato nella tradizione locale quello di Verzuolo, legato invece al filone bizantineggiante lombardo quello novaliciense. Nella seconda parte dell\u2019articolo Bruno Ciliento presenta gli affreschi tre e quattrocenteschi riemersi all\u2019esterno e all\u2019interno della chiesa. Di grande interesse la scoperta, in facciata, di uno stemma della famiglia romana dei Vitelleschi, apposto evidentemente dopo l\u2019attribuzione della prepositura di Verzuolo a Bartolomeo Vitelleschi, vescovo di Corneto e Montefiascone, voluta dall\u2019antipapa Felice V nel 1445. Da segnalare, all\u2019interno, una frammentaria \u2018Adorazione dei magi\u2019 tardotrecentesca, dipinta in controfacciata, e soprattutto il bel ciclo quattrocentesco del primo altare a sinistra, con \u2018Storie di Sant\u2019Antonio abate\u2019, di una bottega locale di buon livello, che spesso raggiunge esiti di grande espressivit\u00e0. Egualmente importanti le scene frammentarie di un ciclo, sempre quattrocentesco, dedicato a San Sebastiano, venuto alla luce sulla parete destra all\u2019altezza del secondo altare, in parte coperte, come le \u2018Storie\u2019 della parete sinistra, da numerosi pannelli votivi: ne emerge l\u2019immagine di una chiesa tardo-quattrocentesca fittamente decorata di affreschi che dovevano rivestire in modo pressoch\u00e9 continuo tutte le pareti, oggi di nuovo apprezzabili nonostante danni e lacune.<\/p>\n

The recovery of the lost memories of Verzuolo,
\na stronghold of the ancient marquisate of Saluzzo<\/strong><\/p>\n

The article presents the results of the latest restoration of the ancient parish church of Verzuolo (in Piedmont), which has revealed an interesting series of medieval frescoes. The article begins with Bruno Ciliento\u2019s brief historical review of the events that first led to the growing importance of the borgo of Verzuolo \u2013 with its castle, its lords and the church linked to them \u2013, then to the slow decline of the castle and church, followed by a renewed interest in the parish church and its consequent restoration from the late nineteenth century onwards.
\nThis historical introduction is followed by Costanza Segre Montel\u2019s account of the Romanesque frescoes at the foot of the campanile, originally the chapel of the first castle of the Lords of Verzuolo. The cycle is dedicated to St. Nicholas. Its restoration has increased the legibility of the frescoes. It has also recovered further, albeit modest, portions of the frescoed surface, which have permitted some scenes to be more securely identified. These frescoes are, together with those of the chapel of Sant\u2019Eldrado at the Abbazie della Novalesa (near Susa), the earliest in Western Europe dedicated to St. Nicholas. Both cycles postdate the translation of the saint\u2019s relics to Bari (1087). They are, however, independent of each other, both in their iconographic models and in their style: that of Verzuolo is firmly rooted in the local figurative tradition, that of Sant\u2019Eldrado is linked instead to the Lombard byzantinizing manner.
\nIn the second part of the article Bruno Ciliento presents the fourteenth\u2013 and fifteenth\u2013century frescoes revealed by the restoration both on the outside and inside of the church. Of great interest is the discovery, on the fa\u00e7ade, of a coat of arms of the Roman family of the Vitelleschi, evidently installed here after Bartolomeo Vitelleschi, Bishop of Corneto and Montefiascone, was awarded the provostship of Verzuolo by the anti\u2013pope Felix V in 1445. The frescoes recovered inside the church include a fragmentary late fourteenth\u2013century \u2018Adoration of the Magi\u2019 on the entrance wall and especially the fine fifteenth\u2013century cycle of the first altar to the left, with \u2018Stories of St. Anthony Abbot\u2019. Attributable to an accomplished local workshop, these frescoes achieve results of great expressiveness. Equally important are the fragmentary scenes of another cycle with \u2018Stories of St. Sebastian\u2019, again dating to the fifteenth century, which came to light on the right wall of the nave, by the second altar; they had in part been covered over, like the \u2018Stories\u2019 on the left wall, by numerous votive panels.
\nWhat emerges from all these finds is the image of a late\u2013fifteenth century parish church, profusely decorated with frescoes which must have covered all its walls in an almost continuous way, and which can now be appreciated anew, in spite of their fragmentary and damaged condition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
