I primi interventi di restauro al ninfeo della Villa Giustiniani (XVII sec.) di Bassano Romano hanno consentito di avviare un cantiere-studio che si \u00e8 avvalso in misura determinante della ricerca d\u2019archivio nell\u2019individuazione delle scelte p rogettuali. Un documento dell\u2019Ottocento ha sciolto importanti interrogativi e ha guidato la ricostruzione di una delle due scale curvilinee in peperino del giardino. Le indagini in sito ed il raffronto con i dati documentali hanno svelato l\u2019accrescimento del terreno del giardino pensile, soprastante la grotta del ninfeo, realizzato nei primi anni del Seicento da Vincenzo Giustiniani, e dimostrato che l\u2019attuale doppia scalinata non risale al Seicento bens\u00ec ad un rifacimento di met\u00e0 Ottocento, quando, per raccordare il dislivello tra il \u201cgiardino dei quadri\u201d ed il sottostante ninfeo e per rendere pi\u00f9 agevole l\u2019ascesa, si scompone l\u2019antica scalinata e si sostituiscono tutti i gradini in peperino aumentandone il numero per ridurre le alzate. Altri documenti dimostrano che l\u2019attuale prospetto in laterizio del ninfeo sostituisce, seppure ricalcandone l\u2019impianto architettonico, l\u2019originario prospetto bugnato, ripartito da lesene e sormontato da una balaustra in peperino, raffigurato nella incisione della\u00a0Galleria Giustiniana. In appendice viene presentato un inedito documento emerso tra le carte dell\u2019Archivio Odescalchi di Bassano, oggi conservato presso l\u2019Archivio di Stato di Roma, firmato da Giovanni Fontana, che illustra i lavori per la riparazione del mulino pubblico di Bassano ed il progetto dell\u2019acquedotto, commissionato nel 1596 da Giuseppe Giustiniani,, \u201cper fare le fontane\u201d nel giardino del palazzo baronale.<\/p>\n

The recovery of the Giardino Segreto of the Villa Giustiniani at Bassano Romano: preliminary archival studies and initial restoration measures
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

The initial restorations measures conducted on the nymphaeum of the seventeenth\u2013century Villa Giustiniani at Bassano Romano have been complemented and informed by an archival research programme aimed at identifying the planning process that went into the villa\u2019s gardens. One nineteenth\u2013century document helped, in particular, to solve important questions, and guided the reconstruction of one of the garden\u2019s two curvilinear peperino stairways. Investigations in situ and correlations with the documentary sources have revealed Vincenzo Giustiniani\u2019s enlargement of the hanging garden, above the grotto of the nymphaeum, in the early years of the seventeenth century. They have also demonstrated that the existing double\u2013ramped staircase does not date to the Seicento but is the result of a mid\u2013nineteenth century reconstruction. In order to bridge the difference in level between the giardino dei quadri and the nymphaeum below and to make it easier to ascend the slope, the original staircase was thus dismantled and all its peperino steps were replaced, increasing their number to reduce the height of their risers. Other documents demonstrate that the existing brick fa\u00e7ade of the nymphaeum replaces \u2014 while at the same time recycling its architectural plan \u2014 the original rusticated fa\u00e7ade, articulated with lesenes and surmounted by a peperino balustrade, as illustrated in the engraving in the Galleria Giustiniana. In an appendix the author presents an unpublished document found in the files of the Odescalchi di Bassano archive, now in the Archivio di Stato in Rome, signed by Giovanni Fontana, which describes the work carried out on repairing the public water\u2013mill of Bassano and the project for an aqueduct, commissioned by Giuseppe Giustiniani in 1596, \u00abper fare le fontane\u00bb (to provide water for the fountains) in the garden of the Villa Giustiniani.
