La personalit\u00e0 del pittore Alessandro Alberti (Sansepolcro, 9 marzo 1551, Roma, 10 luglio 1596) ricordata da fonti e documenti d\u2019archivio era stata finora confusa dagli storici dell\u2019arte con quella dei fratelli Cherubino (1553-1615) e Giovanni (1558-1601), noti decoratori attivi fra l\u2019Italia centrale e Roma negli ultimi decenni del Cinquecento, e assurti a grande fama durante il pontificato di Clemente VIII. Il saggio restituisce la sua identit\u00e0 ad Alessandro, il maggiore dei tre fratelli, il quale dopo un periodo di formazione a Roma, fu a lungo attivo nel Regno di Napoli e ancora a Sansepolcro, Sabbioneta, Roma. Il ritrovamento di un dipinto, firmato, a Piedimonte Matese (Caserta) databile all\u2019ultimo soggiorno napoletano (1594-96) ha consentito di restituire all\u2019artista diversi disegni, gi\u00e0 attribuiti al padre Alberto o a Cherubino, riferibili alla composizione e soprattutto di riconoscere la sua mano nei cicli decorativi condotti insieme ai fratelli. Sulla base dei puntuali riscontri rilevati con la pala napoletana, viene confermato il ruolo principale svolto da Alessandro nella decorazione della Galleria degli Antichi di Sabbioneta (1586-87), su commissione di Vespasiano Gonzaga – segnalato dai documenti ma spesso posto in dubbio \u2013 e avviare il riconoscimento definitivo delle parti spettanti ai tre fratelli nell\u2019oratorio del SS. Crocifisso di Sansepolcro e nella sagrestia dei canonici in San Giovanni in Laterano a Roma, ciclo quest\u2019ultimo che venne a sancire il successo degli Alberti sulla scena artistica romana e che valse ad Alessandro la stima del pontefice Clemente VIII.<\/p>\n

Between Sansepolcro, Sabbioneta and Naples:
\na first contribution to Alessandro Alberti dal Borgo<\/strong><\/p>\n

Art historians have hitherto confused the personality of the painter Alessandro Alberti (b. Sansepolcro, 9 March 1551, d. Rome, 10 July 1596), recorded by sources and archival documents, with that of his brothers Cherubino (1553\u20131615) and Giovanni (1558\u20131601), well known decorators who were active between Central Italy and Rome in the last decades of the sixteenth century and rose to great fame during the pontificate of Clement VIII. The present contribution attempts to redress the balance by restoring his true identity to Alessandro, the eldest of the three brothers. After a period of apprenticeship in Rome, he was long active in the Kingdom of Naples and also at Sansepolcro, Sabbioneta and Rome. The finding of a signed painting at Piedimonte Matese (Caserta), datable to Alessandro\u2019s last Neapolitan sojourn (1594\u201396), has enabled various drawings linked to its composition, hitherto attributed to his father Alberto or his brother Cherubino, to be restored to him. But especially it has enabled his hand to be recognized in the decorative cycles in which Alessandro was involved together with his brothers. On the basis of close correspondences with the Neapolitan altarpiece, the author confirms the leading role played by Alessandro in the decoration of the Galleria degli Antichi at Sabbioneta (1586\u201387), commissioned by Vespasiano Gonzaga \u2013 testified by documents but often placed in doubt \u2013 and is able finally to distinguish the parts attributable to the three brothers in the oratory of the SS. Crocifisso at Sansepolcro and in the sagrestia dei canonici in San Giovanni in Laterano at Rome. This latter cycle set the seal on the rise to prominence of the Alberti brothers on the Roman artistic scene and won Alessandro the esteem of Pope Clement VIII.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
