L\u2019oratorio della Madonna del Morbo a Poppi fu costruito tra il 1656 e il 1659 sul luogo dove sorgeva un tabernacolo molto venerato, al quale la popolazione si era particolarmente affezionata durante la celebre e cruenta epidemia di peste del 1630 \u2013 1631, che colp\u00ec duramente il Casentino, come molte altre parti d\u2019Italia. La piccola chiesa fu affidata ad una confraternita patrocinata dai frati Francescani, e sull\u2019altar maggiore dell\u2019oratorio fu esposta una tavola quattrocentesca raffigurante la Madonna col Bambino e San Giovannino, oggi inserita in un grande tabernacolo in legno dorato, che poggia su tre monumentali gradini, e sovrasta il ciborio. Fino al 1865 essa era invece incorniciata da una tela seicentesca, eseguita pochi anni dopo la costruzione dell\u2019oratorio, e della quale fino ad ora si era persa completamente la memoria. Questo dipinto \u00e8 un\u2019opera firmata e datata nel 1664 da Lorenzo Lippi, uno dei pi\u00f9 importanti pittori fiorentini del Seicento, raffigura i Santi Giuseppe, Antonio da Padova e Torello, e fu commissionato da un membro della locale famiglia dei Rilli. Tolta dall\u2019altare nell\u2019Ottocento, la pala del Lippi fu inviata a Firenze presso la Soprintendenza per essere restaurata, ma se ne persero le tracce, ed essa fu ulteriormente danneggiata dall\u2019alluvione del 1966. Nel 2006 essa \u00e8 giunta infine presso l\u2019Istituto per l\u2019Arte e il Restauro \u201cPalazzo Spinelli\u201d di Firenze per essere sottoposta ad un intervento conservativo, e l\u2019autore del saggio, dopo averla pubblicata una prima volta nel numero 145 del 2008 di \u201cBollettino d\u2019Arte\u201d, ne ricostruisce adesso completamente la storia.<\/p>\n

Addenda on the provenance and commission of a painting by Lorenzo Lippi<\/strong><\/p>\n

The oratory of the Madonna del Morbo at Poppi was built between 1656 and 1659 on the site of a much\u2013venerated tabernacle for which the population of the town had shown particular veneration during the terrible plague epidemic of 1630\u20131631, which raged with particular virulence in the Casentino, as in many other parts of Italy. The little church was assigned to a confraternity under the patronage of the Franciscan friars. On the high altar of the oratory was displayed a fifteenth\u2013century panel representing the \u2018Madonna and Child with the Infant St. John the Baptist\u2019. This is now incorporated in a large tabernacle in gilt wood, resting on three monumental steps and with the ciborium rising over it. Up till 1865, however, it was framed by a seventeenth\u2013century altarpiece, which had been painted a few years after the construction of the oratory, but the memory of which had since been lost. Signed and dated 1664 by Lorenzo Lippi, one of the most important exponents of Florentine painting in the Seicento, this painting on canvas represents \u2018Saints Joseph, Anthony of Padua and Torello\u2019, and was commissioned by a member of the local dei Rilli family. After being removed from the altar in the nineteenth century, Lippi\u2019s altarpiece was sent to the Soprintendenza in Florence to be restored, but all trace of it was subsequently lost, and it was further damaged by the flood in 1966. In 2006 it finally arrived at the Istituto per l\u2019Arte e il Restauro \u201cPalazzo Spinelli\u201d in Florence to undergo further restoration. The author of the present contribution, after having published the painting for the first time in the Bollettino d\u2019Arte (no. 145 of 2008), has now fully reconstructed its history.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
