The San Giobbe profeta/ San Bernardino complex and the Orto Botanico in Venice

The San Giobbe profeta/San Bernardino complex in Cannaregio is the most precocious expression of Venetian religious architecture in the Renaissance style. It was built thanks to the liberality shown by so intellectually enlightened a doge as Cristoforo Moro (1462–1471) towards the Franciscan order of Friars Minor (Osservanti), who observed a strict rule of poverty and could boast of relations with personalities of exceptional spiritual endowment such as Giovanni da Capistrano or Bernardino Albizzeschi. The documentary history of lay patronage of the church has long been known, but the debate on the various phases in the construction of the complex is still open. The recently begun restoration of the surviving structures of the cloister has offered the opportunity to make a series of observations and measurements of the structures both of the convent and the church — in particular those relating to the mid–fifteenth century buildings, preceding the transformations made as a result of the legacy of Cristoforo Moro — and correlate them with what has already been known through the reading of the documentary sources. The examination of the nineteenth–century documents pertaining to San Giobbe scattered in various Venetian archives has also permitted a significant deepening of our knowledge of the buildings of the convent, which were carefully surveyed at the time of the expropriation by the State of the properties of the religious orders in Venice, suppressed on the orders on the French government. Also dating to this interesting period is the establishment of an Orto Botanico overlooking the northern lagoon, i.e. in the areas that would have been made available by the “general demolition” of the buildings of San Giobbe Profeta and San Bernardino. The abandonment of the religious complex by the Friars Minor, who transferred to San Francesco della Vigna in 1806, would soon impose the need to consign its precious heritage of paintings to a museum for reasons of security. The magnificent altarpieces commissioned for the altars of the right wall (that of San Giobbe with Giovanni Bellini’s ‘Sacra Conversazione’ (ante 1492), the Sanudo altar with Vittore Carpaccio’s ‘Presentation of Jesus to the Temple’ (1510), and the Foscari altar with Marco Basaiti’s ‘Agony in the Garden’ (1510) are still today preserved in the Gallerie dell’Accademia together with the huge canvases painted by Sebastiano Mazzoni for the sanctuary.
During the nineteenth century the church would be subjected to fresh art–historical investigation aimed at determining the artists responsible for its sculptural works. Such studies were also stimulated by the results of the various interventions conducted to prevent or repair the damage caused by wartime events in those years. The restoration work was the occasion not only for structural consolidation, but also for a critical restoration aimed at restoring the church to its original appearance. This idea was subsequently revived by the Soprintendente Ferdinando Forlati, who commissioned a meticulous survey of the religious complex, and the conservation of the “finds” of previous building phases brought to light during a campaign of consolidation carried out under his supervision in the 1920s.

["post-5943","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
