In its evocation of the art of antiquity stucco was a\u00a0medium\u00a0that enabled the expression of the kind of Romanitas sought after by these patrons, while at the same time ensuring lower costs and more rapid completion times than other artistic techniques. But it was in its use to set off mural paintings by means of very sophisticated framing techniques that, stucco revealed its full potential, exploiting the paradox between the sculptural imitation of nature and the imitation of marble as statuary ornament.
