La complessit\u00e0 dell\u2019aristocrazia romana tra XV e XVI secolo suggerisce una revisione delle ipotesi formulate dagli storici dell\u2019architettura. Il saggio cerca di mettere in rapporto i tipi di facciata palatina, e dei relativi portali, con le mutevoli esigenze rappresentative dei committenti: dai baroni feudali ai\u00a0nobiles viri<\/em>\u00a0mercantili; dalla nobilt\u00e0 forestiera curiale e cardinalizia, ai casati pontifici di straripante ricchezza.
\nCon un\u2019ampia casistica, il saggio analizza i portali in rapporto al disegno delle facciate, alla gerarchia di qualit\u00e0 dei materiali, alle esigenze di rango dei committenti. Si propone una classificazione in tipi, ordinabili secondo una sequenza storica a partire dalla fine del Quattrocento: dalla mostra architravata del Palazzo Capranica al fornice incorniciato dall\u2019ordine di Palazzo Fieschi, passando per le mostre della Cancelleria e le loro ricadute nell\u2019architettura minore. Si discutono le ragioni del caso limite dei palazzi di scuola bramantesca, nei quali la forza evocativa dell\u2019ordine in facciata conduce sovente all\u2019annullamento del portale. Si propone inoltre la tesi che l\u2019affermarsi della facciata senza ordini sia imposta dal rispetto di un abito conformistico urbano che trasferisce la retorica antiquaria all\u2019interno dei solenni cortili ad arcate. Infine s\u2019individuano nei disegni di Antonio da Sangallo per Palazzo Farnese e la Cancelleria i prototipi del tipo pi\u00f9 diffuso a Roma nei due secoli seguenti: il portale-loggia con balconata, che fonde ingresso e piano nobile in un disegno organico (Palazzo Del Giglio-Borghese), concentrando in una mostra d\u2019affaccio aristocratico il pregio urbano del prospetto.<\/p>\n

The portals of palaces in Rome<\/strong><\/p>\n

The heterogeneity of Rome\u2019s aristocracy during the 15th and 16th centuries suggests the need for a revision of the hypotheses formulated by architectural historians. This essay attempts to relate the typologies of palace fa\u00e7ades and their portals to the changing representational needs of their patrons: from feudal barons to mercantile\u00a0nobiles viri, from foreign curial and cardinalate nobility to the immensely wealthy papal families.
\nOn the basis of a broad number of examples the author analyzes the palace portals in relation to the designs of the fa\u00e7ades, hierarchy of material quality and exigencies of the patrons according to status. A typological classification ordered by chronology starting from the end of the 15th century is proposed: from Palazzo Capranica with its emphatic architraves to the fa\u00e7ade portal with an archway framed by the architectural order (pilasters and cornice) of Palazzo Fieschi, by way of the Cancelleria fa\u00e7ade displays and their impact on minor architecture. The motivations behind the extreme case of the Bramante school palaces in which the evocative power of the fa\u00e7ade\u2019s order often results in a nullification of the portal, are also discussed. The author furthermore contends that the affirmation of the fa\u00e7ade without an architectural order was imposed by obedience to a conformist urban custom of relegating antiquarian rhetoric to the interiors of solemn, arcaded courtyards. Finally, prototypes in the drawings for Palazzo Farnese and the Cancelleria by Antonio da Sangallo for the typology most commonly utilized in Rome over the next two centuries are individuated: the portal\u2013loggia with a balcony that fuses entranceway and piano nobile into a unified design (Palazzo Del Giglio\u2013Borghese), condensing the urban asset of the elegant fa\u00e7ade into an aristocratic show of force.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
