Tra le sculture provenienti da Villa d\u2019Este a Tivoli un posto di rilievo ha da sempre goduto la statua della cosiddetta \u201cPandora\u201d, posta ad ornamento di una delle sue celebri fontane.
\nIl riesame delle descrizioni che la riguardano, delle immagini e dei documenti d\u2019archivio relativi al suo restauro, avvenuto alla met\u00e0 del XVIII secolo dopo il suo ingresso nel Museo Capitolino, ha permesso di fare luce sull\u2019aspetto originario della statua. Lo scultore romano Bartolomeo Cavaceppi, infatti, decise di sostituire la testa moderna inserita nel XVI secolo, con una testa antica presente nelle collezioni capitoline, ritenuta pi\u00f9 appropriata. Della testa originaria, di cui si erano perdute le tracce, \u00e8 possibile proporre ora l\u2019identificazione con un esemplare presente nelle collezioni capitoline. Nello stesso tempo, sulla base della documentazione nota relativa agli artisti operanti nel sesto decennio del XVI secolo per il cardinale Ippolito II d\u2019Este, si suggerisce l\u2019attribuzione della testa della \u201cPandora\u201d allo scultore toscano Valerio Cioli, che con il padre Simone – stando al Vasari \u2013 ebbe l\u2019incarico di restaurare le pi\u00f9 belle tra le sculture antiche di propriet\u00e0 del porporato.<\/div>\n

The \u201cPandora\u201d of Villa d\u2019Este between the Sixteenth and Eighteenth Centuries<\/strong><\/p>\n

The so\u2013called \u201cPandora\u201d, which used to decorate one of the celebrated fountains in the Villa d\u2019Este, always stood out among the statues that came from the villa in Tivoli.
\nA re\u2013examination of the restoration, carried out when the \u201cPandora\u201d entered the Capitoline Museum in the middle of the eighteenth century, allowed new light to be shed on the statue\u2019s original aspect. In fact, it was then that the Roman sculptor Bartolomeo Cavaceppi decided to substitute the modern sixteenth\u2013century head with an ancient head \u2013 considered more appropriate \u2013 from the Capitoline collection. Today, the original, of which all trace had disappeared, has been found in the Capitoline collections. At the same time, based on documentation regarding the artists working for Cardinal Ippolito d\u2019Este in the 1560s, it is possible to attribute the original head of the \u201cPandora\u201d to the Tuscan sculptors Valerio Cioli, and his father Simone \u2014 cited by Vasari \u2014 who were commissioned to restore the most beautiful of the antique statues belonging to the Cardinal.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
