The Imperial Roman Legacy. The “Palatium Octaviani Imperatoris” on the northern slope of the Capitoline hill and its implications for the design of the Capitoline area under Paul III Farnese and Pius IV Medici

This essay provides a different contribution with respect to earlier ones and highlights problems connected with the origins and development of the Capitoline hill in its entirety, both from an architectural (the so–called “tower of Paul III”) as well as from an urban planning point of view (the piazza and surrounding urban context on top of and the San Marco quarter at the bottom of the Capitoline hill). The article also adds new informations, in particular regarding the ancient Roman remains, the so–called Palatium Octaviani Imperatoris, and their relationship with the formation and further development of the entire area.
This article provides an alternative interpretation of the known facts and draws conclusions that are quite different than the prevailing historiography, namely: that Paul III’s papal palace was based on a different building type, later modified precisely because of the ancient Roman structures underneath its foundations; that the design for the piazza on top of the Capitoline hill did not come about a priori, suspended in space without time, but rather that it grew out of a long and complex process made up of a series of interconnected and consecutive developments; that the design for the piazza with two facing palaces invented by Michelangelo did not date from the Farnese pontificate but from that of Pius IV Medici, although the complex was actually realised at a later stage; and, finally, that also the lay–out of the quarter below, with the position of the Via Capitolina and the arrangement of the present–day Piazza del Gesù, was determined by the Palatium Octaviani Imperatoris, whose structures extended as far as the area below the Capitoline hill. Ultimately, the genesis and the resolution of these various urban projects are derived from the interpretation, valorisation and re–use of these pre–existing structures, as they move through the world view of the Renaissance (Paolo III Farnese) to that of the Counter–Reformation (Pio IV Medici).

["post-8550","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
