Another Romanesque: the dating of two drawings conserved in the Biblioteca Ariostea and the original construction of the Cathedral of Ferrara

While only fragmentary architectural elements and documents survive for the purposes of a hypothetical reconstruction of the original hall church interior of the Romanesque cathedral of Ferrara, they suffice for an understanding of the original coherence of its architectural and spatial conception. In this regard, the article focuses on two drawings with the plan and the elevations of the interior of the cathedral that have been diversely considered by the historiography. These belong to a group of heterogeneous plates within a manuscript from the collection of Giovan Battista Aleotti (1546–1636) now in the Biblioteca Ariostea of Ferrara.
In a 1981 study, Bondanini posited that both plates originated at the time of cardinal Lorenzo Magalotti’s 1628 commission to G. B. Aleotti and G. Roscello in the role of expert surveyors, to produce measured drawings of the cathedral. However, a comparison between the cardinal’s request and the differing responses reflected in the two plates as well as an analysis of the drawn elements permits the author to plausibly conclude that only foglio n. 147 is close in date to that commission, and to interpret n. 159 as a project drawing associated with the period of the reconstruction of the apse area at the end of the 15th and beginning of the 16th century, as was suggested in 1895 by Castagnoli, and corroborated by Giglioli in 1935.
In 1954 Verdier had seen inspiration from the northern European Gothic in the characteristic dematerialization of the interior walls of the original construction and resulting spatiality. But the fluid, diaphanous space generated by the masonry diaphragms thinned by the membering of the pseudo colossal order suggests subtle influences from the neighboring late antique architecture of Ravenna.
Furthermore, if it were discovered that a static system composed of light walls on a grid of supports and thrusting structures that intersect longitudinally and transversally was conceived from the beginning with its own adequate system of buttressing, it might be possible to discern the manner of a magister who was familiar with an alternative expression of the Romanesque, one with roots in the Padua district.

["post-9405","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
