La statua di Paolo III Farnese conservata nella chiesa di Santa Maria in Aracoeli faceva parte di quel nutrito gruppo di statue onorarie erette fra XVI e XVII secolo esposte nei palazzi capitolini. Solitamente commissionate dai Conservatori per glorificare pontefici particolarmente magnanimi con il popolo romano, dopo il 1870 alcune di esse vennero trasferite nella chiesa capitolina.
\nLa statua dedicata a Paolo III, eseguita negli anni quaranta del Cinquecento, non ha avuto una grossa fortuna critica e, eccetto un\u2019attribuzione a Leonardo Sormani, \u00e8 sempre stata considerata opera di un artista gravitante intorno alla figura di Guglielmo della Porta, scultore prediletto della famiglia Farnese. Un documento dell\u2019Archivio Storico Capitolino permette di gettare una nuova luce sull\u2019autografia della statua, confermando l\u2019attribuzione a Sormani avanzata ormai pi\u00f9 di trent\u2019anni fa da Monika Butzek. La statua difatti presenta notevoli affinit\u00e0 con le opere documentate dello scultore savonese, come ad esempio le statue di Niccol\u00f2 IV e Pio V o i ritratti di Paolo Odescalchi e Rodolfo Pio da Carpi, e ben si inserisce nel suo percorso stilistico.
\nLa statua dell\u2019Aracoeli \u00e8 quindi la prima opera eseguita da Sormani a Roma e permette di anticipare il suo arrivo in citt\u00e0 di alcuni anni, all\u2019inizio del quinto decennio e non nel biennio 1549-1550; fornisce, inoltre, anche delle conferme importanti circa la supposta presenza dello scultore nella bottega di Guglielmo della Porta, poich\u00e9 sono riscontrabili delle somiglianze anche con la maniera del pi\u00f9 anziano scultore.<\/p>\n

The Statue of Paul III in the Church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli: <\/strong>an addition to the catalogue of Leonardo Sormani<\/strong><\/p>\n

The statue of Paul III Farnese conserved in the church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli was part of a large group of honorific statues displayed in the Capitoline palaces during the 16th and 17th centuries. These works were in large part commissions by the Conservatori for the glorification of pontiffs who showed themselves to be particularly magnanimous with the Roman people; after 1870, a few of the statues were transferred to the nearby church on the Capitoline Hill.
\nThe statue of Paul III, executed in the 1540s, has not enjoyed a particularly fortunate critical history, and with the exception of an attribution to Leonardo Sormani, has always been considered the work of an artist in the orbit of Guglielmo della Porta, then the Farnese family\u2019s favorite sculptor. A document in the Archivio Storico Capitolino has enabled the author to shed new light on the authorship of the sculpture, confirming the attribution to Sormani advanced now over thirty years ago by Monika Butzek. The sculpture indeed displays notable affinities with the documented pieces of the Savona sculptor\u2019s oeuvre \u2014 e.g., his statues of Nicholas IV and Pius V and portraits of Paolo Odescalchi and Rodolfo Pio da Carpi \u2014, and fits neatly into the stylistic sequence of his works.
\nThe Aracoeli statue is thus the first work executed by Sormani in Rome, and permits the re-dating of his arrival in the city to the beginning of the 1540s rather than in 1549-1550 as previously thought. It also furnishes important confirmation of Sormani\u2019s presence in the workshop of Guglielmo della Porta, since similarities with the style of the older sculptor are also observable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
