Su due statue antiche della collezione Podocataro e su alcuni marmi Della Valle"},"content":{"rendered":"<div align=\"justify\">\n<p><strong>Estratto dal fascicolo 41 (gennaio-marzo 2019)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La statua di Mercurio seduto su un ariete, oggi in Polonia nel Castello di \u0141a\u0144cut, \u00e8 forse uno dei marmi antichi pi\u00f9 curiosi usciti dalla bottega di restauro di Vincenzo Pacetti. La sua storia moderna sembrava \u2014 sinora \u2014\u00a0\u00a0avere avuto inizio solo negli anni Ottanta del Settecento, quando il Pacetti riusc\u00ec ad acquistarla e Giuseppe Antonio Guattani la pubblic\u00f2 nei suoi\u00a0<em>Monumenti inediti<\/em>\u00a0del 1786, decretandone la fama sul mercato antiquario del tempo. Un disegno inedito conservato al British Museum permette, ora, di dimostrare la sua presenza a Roma gi\u00e0 dalla met\u00e0 (almeno) del Cinquecento e di riconoscerla nella statua di \u201cFrisso\u201d vista da Ulisse Aldrovandi nel giardino di Palazzo Podocataro, in via del Monserrato. Le testimonianze incrociate dell\u2019Aldrovandi e del Vasari lasciano immaginare uno studiato programma iconografico, in cui la statua di Mercurio si trovava a \u201cdialogare\u201d con la statua \u2014 oggi perduta \u2014 di Bacco seduto accanto a una pantera, gi\u00e0 nella collezione Della Valle-Medici. I disegni sul\u00a0<em>recto<\/em>\u00a0del foglio londinese e quelli su un secondo foglio, riconducibili alla stessa mano (ancora anonima) forniscono, infine, nuove e preziose indicazioni sulla storia collezionistica e sui restauri di alcune celebri sculture del cortile Della Valle.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: center;\"><strong>Seated Gods. Two ancient statues in the Podocataro collection and some Della Valle marbles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u0141a\u0144cut Castle in Poland is home to a statue of a seated Mercury. It\u2019s perhaps one of the most curious ancient marble sculptures to have come out of Vincenzo Pacetti\u2019s restoration workshop. Until now, the earliest known reference to it was as late as the 1800s when Pacetti is reported as buying it from Giuseppe Antonio Guattani. The restorer published it in his <em>Monumenti inediti (Unpublished monuments)<\/em>\u00a0of 1786. This brought it to the fore on the antiques market of the time. Now, an unpublished drawing housed in the British Museum shows that it was on display in Rome at least as early as the mid 1500s. It can be identified as the statue of\u00a0<em>Phryxus<\/em>\u00a0that Ulisse Aldrovandi noted in the gardens of Palazzo Podocataro, in via di Monserrato. By knitting together the writings of Aldrovandi and Vasari an intentional iconographical layout for the garden\u2019s statuary emerges. The statue of Mercury could be seen \u201cin conversation\u201d with the statue of Bacchus seated next to a panther. The latter, now lost, had been in the Della Valle\u2013Medici collection. Drawings on the back of the London document, and others on a second leaf are by the same, as yet unidentified, hand.
