Nella chiesa di Santa Maria di Castello a Corneto sono presenti numerose opere cosmatesche, tutte attribuibili \u2014 con l\u2019eccezione del pavimento e del fonte battesimale che sono privi di firme\u00a0\u00a0\u2014 alla stessa famiglia di marmorari romani, i cui membri, come indicano le evidenze epigrafiche, lavorano in assoluto monopolio nella fabbrica per circa ottanta anni e nell\u2019arco di tre generazioni. Il saggio si concentra sul portale maggiore, \u201cfatto mirabilmente\u201d (fecit optime<\/em>) da\u00a0Petrus Ranucii<\/em>\u00a0nel 1143, e sulla soprastante finestra a bifora, eseguita all\u2019incirca nello stesso periodo dal fratello\u00a0Nicolaus<\/em>. I due manufatti si impongono all\u2019attenzione degli studiosi non solo per le qualit\u00e0 formali e per la bellezza delle decorazioni in marmo e pasta vitrea \u2014 purtroppo in gran parte scomparse \u2014 ma anche perch\u00e9, allo stato attuale delle conoscenze, rappresentano i pi\u00f9 antichi interventi \u201cesterni\u201d realizzati dai Cosmati che fino a quel momento sembra si fossero dedicati esclusivamente alla progettazione dei litostrati e degli elementi dell\u2019arredo presbiteriale. Il portale, che nello splendore dei mosaici assume la valenza di \u201cPorta del Paradiso\u201d, dal punto di vista compositivo si differenzia notevolmente dalle altre strutture d\u2019ingresso realizzate dai marmorari romani nell\u2019Urbe e nei territori della sua \u201cPeriferia\u201d posti sotto il controllo pontificio, mentre la finestra a bifora rappresenta a sua volta un\u00a0unicum<\/em>\u00a0nel vasto repertorio architettonico e ornamentale cosmatesco.<\/p>\n

Notes on the main entrance and double lancet window of the Church of Santa Maria di Castello in Corneto<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are several examples of Cosmatesque art in the Church of Santa Maria di Castello in Corneto. Only two, the pavement and baptismal font, are unsigned. The rest were produced by the same family of Roman marbleworkers. From the inscriptions it\u2019s clear that the family had an absolute monopoly over their workshop for about eighty years, three generations. This paper focuses on the main portal, \u201cmarvellously made\u201d\u00a0(fecit optime<\/em>)\u00a0by\u00a0Petrus Ranucii<\/em>\u00a0in 1143, and his brother\u00a0Nicolaus<\/em>\u2019 double lancet window above. The two were produced more or less simultaneously. It\u2019s not just the quality of the formal elements and the splendid marble and glass paste decoration (unfortunately all but vanished) that draws the eye of academics. It\u2019s also the fact that as far as we know they are the earliest known examples of \u201cexternal\u201d Cosmati artwork. Until then the family appears to have limited itself to pavements and church furnishings. The splendour of the mosaic dec\u00adoration of the portal transforms it into a virtual \u201cDoorway to Heaven\u201d. Its composition differs considerably from other portals produced by Roman marbleworkers in Rome itself and the surrounding Papal States. The double lancet window is one of a kind in the vast selection of architectural and ornamental Cosmatesque artwork.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
