Martino di Simone Regio da Viganello, sfuggente scultore luganese di stanza a Genova, la cui attività documentata va dal 1608 al 1644, sembra essere al tempo stesso una geniale meteora della plastica e un limitato statuario in marmo. L’intervento tenta di andare a più fondo nello spinoso problema di Martino plasticatore e fonditore, prendendo in considerazione in particolare il vulcanico gruppo in terracotta della Flagellazione per il sacro Monte di Varese e i bronzi fusi a Genova per Giovan Francesco Brignole Sale, raffiguranti Mercurio con Cupido e Ercole e Caco. Se è possibile individuare il modello per il perduto Mercurio nell’omonimo bronzo di Francesco Fanelli, col quale Martino collaborò in Santa Maria delle Vigne, si suggerisce l’ipotesi che l’Ercole e Caco sia un bronzo oggi al Metropolitan Museum of Art di New York, che mostra caratteri molto vicini al gruppo marmoreo firmato di Ercole e l’Idra di Aranjuez, così come alle figure della Flagellazione.

This elusive sculptor from Lugano, Martino di Simone Regio da Viganello, is documented as working between 1608 and 1644. He comes over both as an ingenious shooting star in the world of sculpture while at the same time displaying his limited talents in working marble. The paper hopes to go deeper into the prickly problem of Martino the modeller and metal smith. Particular attention is focused on a dynamic terracotta group, the Flagellation, for the Sacro Monte di Varese, and the bronze figures he cast in Genoa for Giovan Francesco Brignole Sale. The latter represent Mercury and Cupid and Hercules and Cacus. The lost clay model for Mercury may correspond to the bronze figure of the same name by Francesco Fanelli (Fanelli had collaborated with Martino in the Church of Santa Maria delle Vigne). If this is the case it’s possible that the bronze Hercules and Cacus now housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is also his. Stylistically it is very similar to a signed marble group entitled Hercules and the Hydra by Aranjuez, as it is to the Flagellation.
