L’autore introduce la storia del restauro dell’opera, che ha segnato una tappa fondamentale di tipo metodologico per i successivi grandi restauri. Racconta come il monumento fosse stato gravemente alterato nel corso dei secoli in seguito a stratificate manomissioni e di come sia stato ricostruito scegliendo di attenersi ad un rigoroso criterio filologico, che ha permesso di ricostruire con certezza la parte inferiore del monumento fino alla camera del giacente e suggerire una possibile soluzione per quella superiore.

Luciano Marchetti  provides an introductory history of the restoration of the funerary monument of Cardinal De Bray, which marked a fundamental methodological premise for later major restorations. He describes how gravely the monument had been altered by stratified misrepresentations over the centuries and why it was decided to reconstruct as far as possible its original appearance by abiding by a strict criterion of authenticity. This permitted the lower part of the monument as far as the chamber with the gisant to be reconstructed with certainty and suggested a possible solution to the upper part.
