L’autrice ripercorre la letteratura critica sul monumento e sul maestro, sottolineando il grande apporto dato alla conoscenza delle sue opere dagli studi di Angiola M. Romanini. Ripercorre l’elenco delle scarse fonti documentarie sull’opera, sia scritte che figurative e presenta alcuni disegni ottocenteschi della tomba, finora poco noti, dovuti a J. A. Ramboux , tra i pochi documenti che raffigurano l’insieme del monumento a tutt’oggi conosciuti.

Ripercorre poi i tentativi fatti nel nostro secolo per le ipotesi di ricostruzione della tomba a partire da quelli del Paniconi (1906) per concludere che anche dopo il restauro recentemente concluso, mentre si è potuta dare una restituzione abbastanza certa della parte inferiore del monumento, ancora di difficile soluzione appare invece la configurazione della parte superiore, soprattutto la posizione delle statue e la loro reciproca relazione.

 

Anna Maria D’Achille reviews the art–historical literature on the monument and its master, emphasizing the great contribution made to the knowledge of Arnolfo’s works by the studies of Angiola Maria Romanini. She lists the meagre documentary sources for the work, both written and figurative, and also presents some nineteenth–century drawings of the tomb by J.A. Ramboux, hitherto little known, among the few documents so far known that illustrate the whole of the monument. She then reviews the attempts made over the past century to reconstruct the tomb, beginning with those proposed by Paniconi (1906). She concludes by noting that, even after the recently concluded restoration, while a fairly secure reconstruction could be proposed for the lower part of the monument, the configuration of its upper part, and in particular the position of the statues and their mutual relation, still seems difficult to resolve
