The decoration of the Farnese’s palaces in the mid–sixteenth century
In the domain of the broader phenomenon of the patronage of decoration by the nobility during the two decades between the years 1540 and 1560, a dense network of family and political/curial relationships around the figure of Pope Paul III Farnese was the premise for numerous commissions for mural decoration in Rome and its environs. It emerges that among the group of Farnesian patrons examined, nine out of fourteen assigned the work to the painter Perino del Vaga, his workshop, or to artists who in various ways gravitated around him. Furthermore, from the analysis of fifteen residences in the Farnese sphere, it emerges that in seven palaces (four belonging to the Farnese and three to their circle) the same all’antica theme, i.e., a procession of dancing figures, appears. The study identifies several other qualifying and distinctive recurrences at Farnesian painting worksites, and enables a reconstruction of the general dynamics of the complex machinery underlying the creation of art during these decades.
