The Alterpiece by Filippino Lippi for the Casali Chapel in San Domenico in Bologna
The altarpiece painted by Filippino Lippi for the Casali Chapel in the basilica of San Domenico is one of the most important Renaissance masterpieces in Bologna, and one that strongly influenced local painters. A series of diagnostic images using radiography and IR reflectography allowed for an in–depth investigation of the execution of this work. This study considers also a series of comparisons with surviving drawings related to this painting and the results of similar diagnostic imaging of other paintings by Filippino. The composition of the Casali altarpiece is the result of a complex development carried out directly on the panel, with numerous modifications in the outlines of the figures and some substantial pentimenti, particularly in the figures of the Child and Saint Paul, and with the addition of the eternal Father giving his blessing and the two angels carrying torches on the righthand side, painted on the first or abbozzo layer of the sky. The National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. holds a pricked drawing of these two angels. The IR images of the corresponding figures in the Casali altarpiece provide scientific confirmation that this drawing may be considered the primary cartoon for them, and is evidence also that this is the first documented occurrence of pouncing on a panel painting by Filippino.
