Le statue-stele della Daunia sono caratterizzate da un complesso sistema decorativo, che, accanto a soggetti figurati e scene narrative, prevede un ampio repertorio di motivi geometrici, ispirato in gran parte alle arti tessili. Come già ipotizzato nel caso dei soggetti figurati, anche per i motivi ornamentali geometrici possono essere rintracciati paralleli nella tradizione figurativa dell’area anatolico-levantina e della Grecia tra l’VIII ed il VII secolo a.C.
Thoughts on the decorative motifs on the robes of the stele statues from Daunia
The complex decorative motifs on stele statues from Daunia combine figures and narrative scenes with a wide range of geometric designs. For the most part they are inspired by textile patterns. The possibility that the figures depicted have counterparts in traditional decorations found in the eighth and seventh century BCE Anatolian region of the Levant and Greece has already been put forward. The same may be true of the geometric designs.
