Gabriele Quaranta: Simone Cantarini: un’antiporta per Angelico Aprosio e altri disegni a tema tassiano
The moralistic pamphlet Lo Scudo di Rinaldo, overo lo specchio del disinganno was published in Venice in 1646 by Angelico Aprosio, known as “Il Ventimiglia”. Its fine frontispiece was engraved by Giovanni Georgi, following a design by Simone Cantarini. Until now it’s gone unnoticed. The frontispiece depicts an episode from the sixteenth century narrative Gerusalemme Liberata by T. Tasso. Interestingly, the artist allegorises the episode. It can be associated with a series of drawings by Cantarini, two in particular. One is in Stockholm, the other Rio de Janeiro. They display a process of elaboration and progressive refinement. Cantarini’s reconstruction of inventio raises the question as to his relationship with Aprosio and fellow men of letters of the time. It must have been through them that he won the commission. Most of all it calls for a revaluation of his drawings, amongst which it’s not hard to find others inspired by Tasso’s poem.
