The Archivio Fotografico Chigi within the Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo e la Documentazione
In the 1970s, the Gabinetto Fotografico Nazionale, under the direction of Carlo Bertelli, increased its catalogue of photographs by acquiring various external collections. Among these was the photographic archive of Prince Francesco Chigi (1881 – 1953), donated by Chigi’s son, Mario, on the basis of a proposal from the Gabinetto Fotografico Nazionale, which took care of restoring a substantial portion of the damaged plates in the collection and carrying out a complete digitalization of the negatives. The images cover a span of time from 1896 to 1943. Between the material already noted, which was exhibited in 1978, and the newly ordered material, there are 5,067 items. This material provides a new reading of its author’s interests, and includes much scientific documentation of the flora and fauna in and around Castel Fusano. Prince Chigi’s interest in natural history led him to become one of the founders of the Giardino Zoologico di Roma, before it was transferred to the municipality in 1917. Francesco Chigi’s family, upon his death, donated his important Lazio ornithological collection to the Rome Zoological Garden. The Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo e la Documentazione’s project has maintained the author’s scientific spirit. The material has been inventoried using photographic conservation criteria, and the digitized restitution (available through the web site of ICCD, portal SAGID) will facilitate the work of future researchers.
