Il contributo propone un primo approfondimento delle tracce documentarie e delle testimonianze materiali relative all’uso dello stucco in Abruzzo e nei territori contermini durante il Cinquecento. Nel versante aquilano, dopo i devastanti e frequenti terremoti che colpirono la zona, cui seguirono gli ingenti rifacimenti sei e settecenteschi, poco o nulla è sopravvissuto. Esistono tuttavia fonti e carte d’archivio che ricordano un estensivo uso dello stucco da parte degli artisti di secondo Cinquecento attivi nell’Aquila. Tra gli artefici spicca la figura di Pompeo Cesura, ma anche alcuni comprimari appaiono degni di nota, come Troilo Mariani, ricordato per la sua particolare abilità di stuccatore, tanto da essere impropriamente avvicinato dall’erudizione municipale alla bottega di Giovanni da Udine. Nel territorio marsicano un caso importante e ancora visibile è rappresentato dal grande altare della cripta di Santa Maria in Valleverde a Celano, un’opera da inquadrarsi in un più ampio panorama di mutue relazioni economico-politiche e storico-artistiche tra Abruzzo e Toscana.
An insight into the problem of stucco in Abruzzo in the Sixteenth century
The paper proposes an initial study of archive indications and material evidence concerning the use of stucco in the Abruzzo and neighbouring territories during the Sixteenth century. On the L’Aquila side, after the devastating and frequent earthquakes that hit the area, followed by major 17th and 18th Century renovations, little or nothing has survived. However, sources in the archives refer to an extensive use of stucco by artists active in L’Aquila in the second half of the Sixteenth century. Among the architects, the figure of Pompeo Cesura stands out, but there are also others worthy of note. Troilo Mariani is remembered in particular for his skill as a plasterer, so much so that he was inappropriately approached by the municipal scholars of the workshop of Giovanni da Udine. In the Marsican territory, the great altar of the crypt of Santa Maria in Valleverde in Celano is an important, and still visible, example, a work to be framed in a broader panorama of mutual economic–political and historical–artistic relations between the Abruzzo and Tuscany.
