L’abbazia di Santa Maria della Sambucina costituisce uno dei più importanti monasteri cistercensi del meridione italiano. Malgrado la riconosciuta centralità del cenobio nella storia e nello sviluppo dell’ordine dei monaci bianchi, l’architettura dell’abbaziale non è stata ancora puntualmente analizzata, specie in relazione alle fonti storiche, pur note, che trattano dei molti cataclismi subiti dall’edificio. Il presente contributo propone l’indagine della storia del complesso basata sul suo esame autoptico, sul serrato confronto con altri edifici coevi e su alcune fonte scritte. Ne risulta un’inedita rilettura delle fasi edilizie della fabbrica che conduce a una nuova cronologia assoluta. Lo studio ha, inoltre, permesso un’originale ricostruzione dell’impianto della nave maggiore della chiesa e conseguenzialmente del suo interno, aprendo nuove prospettive di ricerca.

The Abbey church of Santa Maria della Sambucina, a Cistercian incunabulum in Southern Italy

The Abbey of Santa Maria della Sambucina is one southern Italy’s most important Cistercian monasteries. The monastery is seen as playing a central role in the history and development of the order of the white monks. In spite of this, the abbey’s architecture has not yet been thoroughly explored, and historical sources, though known, have for the most part been left untouched. The documents record numerous upheavals that the complex has been through. This paper intends to look into the history of the abbey, disassembling its construction and comparing it to other contemporary buildings, as well as looking at the written sources. There is a completely new interpretation of the phases of its construction, and, subsequently, the complex has been given a new timescale. Analysis has provided a reconstruction of the original layout of the main nave of the church and later changes to its interior, opening up new horizons for research.
