A Caltagirone, precisamente nella cattedrale intitolata a San Giuliano, si conserva un’opera argentea proveniente da una bottega romana. Si tratta di una pisside riccamente ornata, databile alla seconda metà del XVIII secolo. La pisside ha la base mistilinea, tripartita e decorata da un motivo a ovoli nella modanatura, e reca all’interno del piede tre punzoni uguali con gigli di Francia e le lettere «LV». Costantino Bulgari attribuisce questo bollo all’argentiere romano Luigi Valadier (1726–1785). Il bollo di questo artista è talvolta accompagnato da un altro punzone recante, su due righe, le seguenti parole: «VALADIER ROMA», bollo che si può leggere anch’esso sulla pisside di Caltagirone. Non solo, il prezioso oggetto è del tutto simile alla pisside effigiata in un disegno acquistato di recente dal Gabinetto dei Disegni e delle Stampe degli Uffizi che qui si pubblica per la prima volta. Infine, dell’opera sopravvive un mandato di pagamento del 1783 conservato presso l’Archivio parrocchiale, che svela altre preziose informazioni sulla sua storia.

Two unpublished pyxes in Caltagirone by the Roman silver and goldsmith Luigi Valadier

Caltagirone’s cathedral is dedicated to San Giuliano and is home to a work of art crafted by a silversmith in Rome. The richly decorated pyxis dates back to the second half of the 18th century. The object has a mixtilinear base, separated into three parts with a moulded lozenge decoration. The three identical marks punched inside the foot have a fleurs de lys and carry the letters ‘LV’. Costantino Bulgari identifies this mark as belonging to the Roman silversmith Luigi Valadier (1726–1785). The mark of this artist is sometimes accompanied by another, ‘VALADIER ROMA’ punched on two lines, which is also to be found on the Caltagirone pyxis. The precious piece is identical to a pyxis depicted in a drawing recently purchased by the Gabinetto dei Disegni e delle Stampe degli Uffizi, published here for the first time. A payment order for the work is still preserved in the parish archives, dated 1783, giving us still more precious information about its history.
