BOLLETTINO D'ARTE Viviana Cardarelli, Un mostro marino in ceramica dalle pendici nord–orientali del Palatino

Il contributo riguarda due frammenti ceramici rinvenuti nel 2004 presso le pendici N–E del Palatino e pertinenti a un unico oggetto. L’interesse per il manufatto è legato alla sua forma che per il momento non trova confronti nell’ambito della sigillata italica. Il reperto è interpretabile come contenitore per versare, conformato a guisa di mostro marino (ketos), forse un askòs che in conformità a considerazioni tecniche, morfologiche e ideologiche potrebbe essere stato prodotto tra l’età augustea e l’età giulio-claudia.
A pottery sea monster from the north–eastern slopes of the Palatine
The paper focuses on two fragments of Italic terra sigillata pottery found during the 2004 excavation on the north–eastern slopes of the Palatine. They belong to the same artefact, which appears to be a pouring vessel, perhaps an askòs. No other examples have yet been found of Italic terra sigillata like this, in the shape of a sea monster (ketos). From technical, morphological and ideological considerations, the vessel may have been made between the Augustan and Julio–Claudian periods.
