Il contributo ripercorre la storia cinquecentesca della cappella di Agostino Chigi, la prima che si apre a destra della navata. Sulla scorta di nuova documentazione conservata soprattutto presso l’Archivio Storico di San Pietro in Vincoli se ne riesce a comprendere meglio il programma d’immagini e la centralità assegnata al tema della resurrezione. Si giunge inoltre a mettere meglio a fuoco anche le vicende relative alla fine del secolo, quando il patronato della cappella venne acquisito, nel 1579, da Mario e Girolamo Ferri Orsini.

The Agostino Chigi Chapel: patronage, liturgy and Raphael’s building project

Drawing from fresh documents, mostly housed in the archives of San Pietro in Vincoli, the paper tracks the transformations of Agostino Chigi’s family chapel during the sixteenth century. The chapel is first on the right in the nave. A better understanding emerges of its imagery and the centrality assigned to the theme of the Resurrection. Light is also shed on events towards the end of the century, in 1579, when Mario and Girolamo Ferri Orsini acquired the chapel’s patronage.
