Il breve saggio prende in analisi la Visitazione, il quadro che Carlo Maratti dipinse per Alessandro VII nel contesto dei lavori di rinnovamento dell’ottagono. La tela, di grandi dimensioni è un’opera di grande respiro, che attualmente, grazie al restauro del 1979, è possibile datare con certezza al 1666, anno che segna la fine del momento sacchiano–lanfranchiano di Maratti per aprire una nuova fase, più suscettibile all’influsso berniniano. Nel testo viene messo in luce come l’artista abbia saputo sapientemente amalgamare, in un linguaggio omogeneo, differenti istanze figurative (da Raffaello a Reni, da Barocci a Pietro da Cortona), contribuendo alla creazione di una precipua cifra stilistica. Il saggio inoltre si concentra sulla genesi di quest’opera attraverso il ricco materiale grafico noto, espungendo i disegni preparatori per la tela, di medesimo soggetto, realizzata da Maratti invece per il Duomo di Siena, fogli spesso confusi tra le due commissioni chigiane.

The Marian cycle (Part II): Carlo Maratti’s Visitation

A short paper that analyses Carlo Maratti’s large canvas of the Visitation, painted for Alexander VII during the renovation of the octagon. Following its 1979 restoration, the painting can now be dated with certainty to 1666, at the end of Maratti’s Sacchi–Lanfranco period and at the start of a phase in which he was more susceptible to Bernini’s influence. The work’s great scope means that Maratti can skillfully blend different figurative styles into a single coherent language, from Raphael to Reni and Barocci to Pietro da Cortona, finding his own distinct style in the process. The paper also focuses on the groundwork that the artist put in, prior to painting, drawing from an abundance of known graphic material. However, the preparatory drawings for the canvas of the same subject that Maratti created for Siena Cathedral have been left out. Both works were commissioned by the Chigi pope, and the two sets of drawings often get mixed together.
