Antonio Cuccia: Una proposta palermitana per Gherardo delle Notti: il “Sacrificio di San Bartolomeo” della chiesa dei Carmelitani Scalzi
A Palermo Proposal for Gerhard van Honthorst: the Sacrifice of Saint Bartholomew in the church of the Discalced Carmelites
>A large altarpiece from the church of the Discalced Carmelites in Palermo, traditionally recorded in the local historiography as a “Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew” and attributed to Spagnoletto, has been rediscovered in the deposits of Palazzo Abatellis and analyzed by the author of the essay, who reinterprets the subject as a “Sacrifice of St. Bartholomew” in parallel to the Passion of the Child Christ. Viewed in this key, the theme corresponds to the eschatological expectations of the reformed Order and its missionary impetus that were construed in this sense by the benefactor Bartolomeo Fleres, munificent financier of the Casa dei Novizi (Novices’ convent) founded to raise youths educated to that purpose. In light of historical events recording the presence in Palermo for the foundation of the convent of Father Domenico di Gesù Maria, future prior of the church of Santa Maria della Scala in Rome, recognized by critics as the individual who inspired and assigned the commission for the Ecstasy of Saint Paul, the author here advances the attribution of the Palermo painting to the same artist, i.e., Gerhard van Honthorst, under the same patronage circumstances. Beyond the meaningful and atypical daylight setting present in both works, the two paintings share a temperament comparable with that expressed by the Dutch painter in his productions of 1616–1617, exhibiting particular attention to the classicizing Emilian expression of the Roman Baroque as interpreted by Lanfranco, but with a distinctly Flemish sensibility for a luminosity suggested with brighter tonalities.
